If you're taking children, you'll want to make sure that the property is a good fit for families. If you're visiting in the summer, you may want a home with a pool. In the winter, you might want to be as close to the slopes as possible.

You also need to consider your budget. Break down the total cost per person per night and see what works for you.

Some people who visit Telluride do so for a specific reason. They might want to be as close to the ski slopes as they can be, or they may prefer being nearer to downtown for shopping, dining and the nightlife. Does it have a gourmet kitchen? Hot tub? Game room? Fireplace? How many bedrooms? Lots of outdoor space? Good access to skiing and activities? Is it a good place for a Telluride wedding?

You'll have to also consider price. In the long run, renting a vacation home can be much more cost effective than renting hotel rooms.

Booking early is critical if you want your favorite properties to be available. Telluride is a busy place all year. Hiking and nature walks are popular in the spring. Water sports and festivals are highlights of the summer. Fall colors draw visitors in the autumn, and skiing, snowboarding and other sports take precedence in the winter.

If you're flying to Colorado for your vacation, you'll also have the best choice of flights. A year in advance is not that far ahead to plan for the best selection of accommodations and transportation.

If you're not driving your own vehicle to Telluride, you can arrange to rent a car while you're there (although it isn't necessary). During the winter, there are more plentiful flights from major cities to Montrose (MTJ) Airport, 65 scenic miles away. The Telluride Regional Airport (TEX) is located just 10 minutes from downtown Telluride and Mountain Village. In most cases, you can book your flights up to 11 months in advance of your arrival. You can take a shuttle to or from either airport into Telluride.

Once you arrive in Telluride, the free gondola will take you between Telluride and Mountain Village.
